Sailing holiday in the Southwest, July 2010: Sail to the Scilly Isles.
Sailing Holiday starting from Falmouth.
7 nights on board.
Saturday 17th to the 24th July 2010.
Intention of Sailing (weather permitting) to the Scillies.
Take as much a part in Sailing & Navigating the yacht as you like.
No previous sailing experience required.
Why?
One of our clients wants to sail to there. An ambition, a goal. We put on Sailing experiences that our contacts want!
We've a wee gamble about the weather. The gamble would be the same for any week we might attempt this. Because of the location of the Islands, we need a suitable weather window of at least four days, in order to safely get there and back.
From Falmouth?
Yes, a good place to start from.
A day sail (and get your Sea legs) would take us to Penzance. From there we would start a passage just over 60nM to get to The Islands.
If the weather was fair, that could be on the Monday. Whatever else we did, we'd have to sail back towards Land's End by Thursday at the latest.
We could therefore have up to two days to explore the Islands, if we want.
How do I get to Cornwall?
EM Sailing will co-ordinate travel.
It may be you drive, perhaps car-share with someone else on the same holiday, maybe go by train. However you get there, we'll tell you when and where in Falmouth you need to be. We will help you get there!
What if . . . .
. . . . the weather will not allow us to sail to the Scillies?
There are plenty of other destinations that would not need the same weather window. There is a lot of sailing in sheltered water at Falmouth itself. There's the Helford River. A Coastal trip to Fowey. A passage to Plymouth and lots beside.
Generally we will always try to find you a mix of remote anchorage's and towns with all mod cons.
You can slide a Google Map about with your mouse and change the zoom!
We expect to provide most of your main meals on-board, and you are most welcome if you want to be involved in preparing food or cooking a meal. We shall have a couple of meals out though.
Our July 2010 thoughts . . . .
Starting from Falmouth:
Saturday July 17th: You will need to get to the marina probably before 4 p.m.
You may help us get the gear and provisions stowed. We might slip out of the marina for an hour or two for a practice sail and to help us find our way round the yacht. Probably a meal aboard will be followed by a drink ashore.
Sunday July 18th: Sail south and around the Lizard then head WNW for Penzance. Pick up a mooring buoy south of the pier. Get ashore in the dinghy.
Monday July 19th:
Penzance to the Scilly Isles. It's going to take most of the day. Perhaps a chance to skipper a 60nM passage.
Tuesday & Wednesday : If the foregoing works well, we can have a couple of days (if we all want to) to explore various parts of the Islands.
We'll have a meal ashore for sure! We might have to try the local beer (just to be polite).
You might use the local boat service that plies between the Islands. You might go for a walk.
Thursday July 22nd: This is the day to set out to go back to the English mainland. It's a good 60nM back of course.
Our destination many depend on many factors. We may choose to make part of this a night crossing.
Friday & Saturday July 24th: Maybe it will be Penzance to Falmouth, perhaps we will have gone somewhere else! Whichever it is, we will not want to be far from Falmouth for our arrival for handing back on Saturday morning.
